Of late, it’s become extremely fashionable to own a set of big-pit reels regardless of the venue that you fish, well these little black beauties are set to change the trend. This compact baitrunner reel offers bundles of features but without breaking the bank. Featuring S-Surve Oscillation, these reels possess great line lay to aid casting and are fitted with a front and rear drag system, plus an instant anti-reverse function. With a gear ratio of 4.

The top-end rod market is awash with some of the most established brands in carp fishing. It’s a niche market that many companies often struggle to get into. Having had great success with its NCT casting rod, Sonik has gone back to the drawing board in a bid to improve its top-end rod range. The first thing that hits you when you pick up a Gravity X is how light it is.

Marc Coulson’s verdict. . . So far the Gravity X has lived up to all expectations.

Marc Coulson’s verdict - Early signs are extremely good. 3. 5/5 Okay, first things first, I have only actually had these out a handful of times because my fishing doesn’t warrant their use at the moment. Small waters and wary carp do not respond to thrashing the water to a foam with a marker and then spodding over the top.

To match the impressive Gravity X range of rods, Sonik has introduced one of each of the utility rods and they both appear, at first inspection, to be well up to the task. I’ve not had the chance to really put them through their paces, but a few casts on a local lake have provided me with at least a first impression and, I must say, they feel spot-on. Both boast a clean crisp action, with the spod rod obviously being the beefier. In fact, it’s so beefy that I had to load a spod right up to feel like I was properly compressing it, but bear in mind that I do not consider myself a huge caster.

Short for Nano-Carbon Technology, NCTs are Sonik’s first foray into the high-end rod market. They certainly look the part and the details gained from Sonik’s Ian McCormack were just as impressive. “The rod blank is the key feature. A completely new type of carbon is used, boasting a decrease in the amount of resin, while maintaining reliable strength,” explained Ian.

BARGAIN!Whether you like a 12ft, 13ft or a smaller 9ft or 10ft wand, you want to enjoy the experience and, new for 2016, the SK3 rods tick that box. With a very progressive middle to tip action, the 9ft variations are ideal for anglers targeting small waters or who like to fish at close quarters. Our designer, Katie Griffiths, has started to carp fish and found that shorter rods are actually easier to control, thus resulting in increased accuracy and casting, so bear that in mind for any newcomers to our sport, or equally if you would like the children to get involved. The rods are constructed from a powerful low-resin carbon fibre blank incorporating a 1K carbon weave on the butt section.

TC editor Marc Coulson says: If seeing that price for these superb, limited edition carp rods sees you frantically searching Google to find out where you can order a set now, then the first thing we’ll tell you is that these are pretty much exclusive to Angling Direct. The bespoke 3. 75lb test rods are designed with the long-range angler in mind, albeit they do offer an element of forgiveness for close-in fights and that critical period when the carp nears the net. We got our own Dan Murrell (pictured below), who can really chuck it, to put this rod through its paces and the results were very impressive indeed.

The original sk4 rods from Sonik were somewhat of a revelation. The cutting-edge technology involved and the resulting performance far outweighed the moderate price tag of around £180. New for 2013, the sk4XTR is effectively an extreme version with improvements noticeable across the board. Despite this, the top-end version has only increased in price by 20 notes.
