For almost a decade the Warrior range of rods has been among the best-selling budget carp rods in the world, with the most recent addition being the Warrior S. It’s often said that if you buy cheap you buy twice but, trust us on this, with these you won’t. They look, feel and perform way above their retail price and, to put more emphasis on this point, none other than TC regular Ian ‘Chilly’ Chillcott uses the 2. 75lb Warrior S for plenty of his fishing.
There is no hiding away from the recent trend in getting up close and personal with your quarry utilising time and space-saving short compact setups. At the forefront of this recent craze were without doubt the Dwarf and Scope ranges from Nash. Well, furthering its claim on this market, it is proud to release the new versions of the Dwarf rod range. Starting from a miniscule 6ft 2lb model they are also available in 9ft and 10ft lengths with test curves up to 3.
Nowadays you can get a lot for your money when buying a set of rods and the Kevin Nash-inspired Entities are no exception. Despite being extremely competitively priced, they’re packed with performance. They are available in three test curves, namely 2. 75lb, 3lb and 3.
TC Reader Matthew Rynor says: I recently received the Dwarf rods for my 13th birthday present and decided to send my review in to Total Carp. Due to my small size I find 12ft rods a bit of a handful, so the Dwarfs are great. I have fished up to 50 yards with a baited rig, as they lend themselves much better to the small waters I fish. I couple them with small Baitrunner reels, making the setup lightweight.

Designed to be used as a long-range tool, the Affinity features two, long, tapered, forged-aluminium spools and a slow oscillation to ensure line lay is neat and efficient, helping to gain those vital extra yards. Penn is a name held in high regard where fishing reels are concerned, but more so in sea angling than carp. However, we are sure that’s all set to change. Stainless ball bearings make for a smooth action, even when cranking a lead back, and the carbon matrix front drag means you’re only a click away from staying in control of your quarry in the heat of battle.

Slim carbon rods with full Japanese shrink-wrap handle, stainless butt cap and carbon line clip. Despite the forgiving tip, they’re also capable casting tools. Two 12ft models, in 2. 75lb and 3lb test curves.
Since Fox’s Warrior blazed a trail some seven or eight years ago, carp rods at the lower end of the budget spectrum continue to get better and better. This is one area where you can definitely get some real value for money, some bang for your buck, if you like. Shimano’s Alivio DX is a classic case in point, with the tackle giant’s ability to produce its own blanks and completely control the quality of what comes out as the end product. In this case, that end product is a great-looking rod that boasts all the casting and playing characteristics that 90 per cent of carp anglers need.
A superb budget rod, these perform well above their price point, particularly concerning casting and the fish-playing action. The looks are good and there are 10 versions to choose from, including four three-piece options. RRP: £59. 99FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO: www.
