GUEST REVIEWER Editor of Advanced Carp Fishing Magazine Max Hendry’s verdict: Faultless casting and weighs next to nothing. 4/5 I got a set a Cast’izm reels in for review last year. I was after a small, compact reel that would be ideal for using on canals or small waters with my shorter 10ft rods. Like the Cast’izm QDA reel the Mag Sealing ensures the reel remains super-smooth no matter how much abuse you give it.

When I first received the CAST’IZM I thought it had been sent in error. It looked and felt sublime but I wrongly assumed that it was a heavy-duty feeder reel, so I e-mailed Stephen McCaveny at Daiwa to ask where it needed to be. There was an apology, but not for having sent it, more for not having told me he’d done so. It turns out the CAST’IZM is the latest stunning reel that Daiwa has launched onto the carp market and it appears to be a revelation.

The compact big-pit reel has become a popular concept of late. All the casting ability and line capacity meets a more lightweight construction making them lighter. The Crosscast from Daiwa is the latest introduction to this concept. Featuring many of the fantastic parts found on reels with a much higher price tag, the main feature is the free-spool facility, which allows you to switch between fighting drag and free spool in just a flick.

Open up the box of a Crosscast X and a thing of beauty is revealed. In a world where first impressions mean so much, the Crosscast X ticks all the right boxes. The requisite Daiwa quality is immediately obvious and the reel screams ‘look at me’. There is an element of deception here because you could be forgiven for thinking that what you have just unpacked is likely to have set you back a small fortune.

We love these! - great product at a great price Designed around the medium-sized-water premise, the new Emblem BR 25A is a compact size coupled with big-pit performance. In recent years it appears the trend has been to either go back to ‘cult retro’ reels or look for large big-pit machines because bigger is better, or so everyone thought. It will be equally at home on an intimate five-acre water as it will on a large expanse of 80 acres. Is this possible? According to the technical guys at Daiwa it is not only possible but a reality, while keeping the price within a sensible range.

Daiwa has always had a certain prestige surrounding its products, particularly where reels are concerned. We ventured to its latest trade show to find out all about the new releases for 2016 and to say we left impressed would be a severe understatement. Renowned for its traditional big-pit designs, we were particularly intrigued by the new and very exciting Emblem Bait N Run model. The smaller reduced shape makes this version an ideal choice for small to medium-sized waters.

Dedicated spod reel that boasts massive retrieve ratio, large casting capability, big-pit line capacity and two line clips to allow baiting of two spots at once. Doubles as a great marker reel too. £159. 99For more information go to www.

Having first ‘Used & Abused’ this reel last year, I felt an update, after another year’s use, fitting because this robust Emblem Spod reel is still going strong. It remains an absolute workhorse and has coped with significant use on both my spod and marker-rod setups. The big spool makes casting a doddle and the impressive retrieve also winding those long casts back a simple affair. I wrote last time that I liked the twin line clips and the possibilities it opens up, but since then I have broken the clip off my marker and, truth be told, it’s made little difference, so perhaps it’s not that essential after all.

TC reader Phil Kirkham from Cardiff says: "I couldn’t believe it when Marc Coulson sent me two of these new reels from Daiwa. They are so new, in fact, that my local tackle shop doesn’t even have them in stock yet. "I’ve used them six times and they’ve been brilliant. I used to have some Daiwa Regals and I expected that these would be very similar.

Daiwa is undoubtedly best known for its top-end rods and reels, but there is so much more to the brand than just the wallet-busting stuff, as you’ll see elsewhere in these pages with the Mission DF rods. The Emcast 5000A is another similar example, with a retail price of just £100. Just about every company that makes reels will tell you that the mid to lower-price range products feel like a reel costing twice as much. It’s not always true but in the case of this reel it has never been truer.

Spodding and marker float work require an altogether different capability from a reel, compared with a general fishing one, as more anglers are realising. Daiwa has produced the extremely popular Emblem Spod Reel for a few years but has now brought such a key piece of kit into the price range of more anglers with this Emcast version. It matches the superb (especially when you consider the price) Emcast 5000A, allowing the angler to team up matching kit but without breaking the bank. If you don’t use Emcast reels, however, the features on this still make it a great choice for spod and marker work.

In days gone by, most specialist marker rods had soft tips, which apparently gave you a better feel of the knocks, taps and glides fed back through your line. However, what actually happened was that a soft tip cushioned a lot of the feel, so they did in fact defeat the object. Then, a few years back, somebody finally twigged and made marker rods with tips of the correct stiffness. Bingo, even more recently somebody twigged that this made them a bit more like spod rods and, hey presto, out came some combination rods such as this one.
