Updated version of the classic Long Cast Baitrunner. Everything has been improved, including the Baitrunner, drag and general build quality. This remains a workhorse big-pit reel that will cope with lots of use and abuse. A medium version is also available.

Shimano produced the original big-pit carp reel many moons ago in the form of ground-breaking Long Cast Baitrunner, which has always been the preferred reel of many specimen anglers. The XT-A is the new modernised version of its predecessor, which is just as reliable and as much of a bombproof workhorse as before, with a few additional features that help to improve on what was an already great product. The slow oscillation helps achieve an even better uninhibited line lay to aid distance and accuracy when casting. Constructed from modern materials and with a more up-to-date design, the XT-A Long Cast has been reworked to improve durability and the internal gears redesigned to increase the cranking power.

I, like so many people, used to own a set of the original Shimano Big Pits and benefited from years of their indestructible nature, huge cranking power and, of course, the Baitrunner system. More recent models have followed in this tradition but, like the original, they have been a little on the bulky and heavy side. This new version, made with Shimano’s excellent Ci4 material to reduce weight, is absolutely superb. Available in big and medium sizes there is a reel out of the two to suit all angling situations.

The original Baitrunner Long Cast (LC), lovingly known as the ‘Shimano Big Pit’ among its many users, gained a huge following with anglers who appreciated its rugged build quality, cranking power and reliability. Very few serious carp anglers over the last decade haven’t owned a set of these and very many still do. A modernised version of the Long Cast has been introduced, boasting the same reliability but with engineering to bring it into the modern age. As well as this model, Shimano has also introduced a medium version with the same attributes but in a more compact size, much more manageable for anglers on small to medium-sized venues.

If ever a product belied its price tag it has to be this reel. When I visited Shimano HQ and was treated to a first look at several new items, the firm’s Richard Griffiths moved on to the Speedcast and said: “You’re gonna like this, mate. ” He wasn’t wrong and as he ran through its host of features I was impressed with what it had to offer. The build quality too was typically Shimano – rugged and built to last but with pleasing aesthetics (it really does look the part with its near complete black design).

Awesome!Marc Coulson’s verdict - Extremely impressive – far better than I expected. 4/5 It’s been a very long time since I used a multi-piece rod and, if I’m honest, I didn’t think too many companies still made them, let alone realise how popular they still are. Ideal for keeping in the back of your car, taking on holiday or just for the angler with limited storage space, for me they served a purpose but were never actually that good. However, I was hugely surprised by this four-piece TX Compact.

I’d never used any top-end big-pit reels before so was excited when asked to test this one for a few months. So far, that excitement has been well founded. It’s an out-and-out big-pit reel designed essentially for casting. I am not a huge caster but I’d definitely say that this Ultegra has added a few yards already.

When we heard that the team at Shimano had a new big pit on the market, you can imagine our excitement. Having developed some of the best carp fishing reels over the years, we automatically set the bar high and this new launch has certainly lived up to our expectations. As soon as we opened the box the improved matt black cosmetics stuck out; this timeless finish will be a great addition to any existing setup and is sure to be a firm favourite among the ‘cult anglers’. Moving onto the reel itself, the instant drag is simply a joy to use.
