Standing for All Season, I have been testing the AS 365 Compact since December and I have been out in very cold conditions, well the brief spells we have encountered anyway. Being the Compact I thought that by saving space and weight the bag would suffer and be a little chilly. However, I have been pleasantly surprised. Inside there are baffle strips that run the length of the bag and these enable the user to warm the bag much faster because there is less wasted space to heat.

We chose the VRS2 standard bag to test, being in the middle of the range between the compact and the wide variations. The Ventec was the quickest bag to warm up, reaching over 33ºC in just an hour. We absolutely love the RipStop waterproof material and the fact the versatility of the bag means it can be used as either a fully fledged five season or simply converted to a smaller three-season bag. The major drawback is that when packed away in its supplied bag it is the largest on test and considerably larger than the others.

Without a doubt the top choice for the roving angler. Packing down to the smallest size and being the second lightest on test, the X Snugpak Techlite showed remarkable heat retention properties when tested. Sadly there is no escaping the price and, yes, it is the most expensive on test but for the anglers who can afford it and rely on a lightweight, high-performance bag, this has got to be the choice. Only dropping by 2.

AS stands for all season and that couldn’t be truer. A reversible inner system can be zipped in or out as you would prefer, with the added benefit of choosing between a warm fleece or ultra-soft polyester material. The outer boasts a breathable and waterproof material, so sleeping under the stars is possible. Internal baffles are an ingenious way of helping you to warm the bag up quicker, while external baffles prevent any draughts.

At just under £90 the Discovery is the joint cheapest on test, alongside the Chub Vantage. You may be expecting a no thrills, cheap and cheerful product but that is not the case at all. With a very generous external draught skirt there is no way uncomfortable breezes can enter through the zip, which can often cause a restless night’s sleep. Another key feature is the external pocket on the tip of the bag, perfect for either your mobile phone or alarm receiver, keeping it to hand yet protected and close enough to wake you when needed.

The second heaviest on test and one of the slowest to pack away into the supplied canvas carryall, which we must say is the most durable we have come across. The Benchmark offers superb value for money and the fleece lining helps the bag retain a lot of heat internally but can also be switched around to offer the smooth peachskin layer in a matter of minutes. Constructed from several reversible layers, this bag can be utilised all year round, ensuring you can tailor it to your requirements without having to buy another for the warmer seasons. The breathable and waterproof outer is another solid idea from Avid.

New on the market, we were keen to put it through its paces and considering it’s a single-layered bag we were astounded by the results. Minimalist in design, it boasts several unique features that we think are extremely clever and indeed useful. First up, the bottom of the bag utilises a drawcord system and three-quarter-length zip so you can reduce the amount of wasted space at the bottom to help warm the bag up even quicker with your body heat. Staying with the bottom, a detachable, easy to clean heavy-duty foot protector is supplied, while the head end sees two internal handwarmer pockets for wraparound comfort.

If you are in the market for a new sleeping bag then look no further. We have chosen two from the Advanta range that we feel will keep you warm and cosy through those cold hours of darkness that will soon be upon us. Both benefit from a luxurious peach skin cotton outer and generous Holofil insulation filling. An attached fleece baffle and no less than seven draft excluder skirts also help to retain the warmth and keep out the dreaded cold breeze that can often keep you tossing and turning all night.
