The TC boys get to grips with tackle and bait, testing them to the limit out on the bank. Here’s what they think…SHIMANO ULTEGRA 5500 Ci4 XS-A REELRRP: £249. 99Website: www. shimano-eu.
Shimano has a great reputation when it comes to producing reels and the Ultegra 5500XT-C is no exception. With all the features of the larger big-pit reels fitted into a stylish and compact body, which is ideal for fishing smaller waters or to complement lighter setups, all in all, this is a superb piece of kit. Price: £149. 99 Website: www.
I used the previous incarnation of the Ultegra 5500, lovingly christened the ‘baby big pit’ although that one didn’t boast Shimano’s unique Front Baitrunner system. When Shimano asked me to upgrade my test set to this, the latest model, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to switch, although I thought the Baitrunner might be a handy addition. I should never have shown any hesitation and, somehow, Shimano has managed to make the 5500 even better. The number equates to the size of the reel – there’s a 14000 version for you out-and-out distance anglers – and it sits between compact and big pit in terms of reel bodies and capacity.
Shimano’s introduction of its Ci4 material allowed the tackle giant to produce its array of leading carp reels in a much lighter form. Ci4 is basically as strong as traditional materials but weighs considerably less, and it now features on several of Shimano’s top-end reels. This particular reel made a huge impression on our team, as well as that of our sister magazine, Advanced Carp Fishing. The editor of that title, Tim Hodges, was so impressed, in fact, that he tried to get away with not sending them back… but had an epic fail! We’ve looked before at what have been christened ‘baby big pits’ and their uses continue to grow.
Since the release of the original Baitrunner from Shimano in the 1980s, 25 years of development, research and passion has pushed them to the launch of the brand-new Baitrunner X-Aero models. Combining the much-loved traditional Baitrunner free-spool leaver with a more modern and desirable large ‘Aero Concept’ spool results in the next evolutionary step for Baitrunners, offering the attractive characteristics of big-pit reels but with the smooth fish-playing attributes associated with Baitrunners. The larger spool also helps to increase the retrieval distance to just less than a metre with one turn. Utilising Aero Wrap II technology and a two-speed oscillation ensures precise line lay, aiding in casting and general line care.
Read any rod manufacturer’s brochures and they’ll describe the perfect carp rods that boast huge casting potential as well as the ability to play fish under the rods tips. Whether or not this is even possible is open to debate.
Shimano’s description of the XS1 Intensity touches on that but focuses on the build of the blank and its tip recovery, something that is vital in casting accuracy and distance. It also boasts of a super-slim blank thanks to Shimano’s Cap T technology, whatever that is!
In reality, the boasts are pretty accurate.
I remember my first set of Shimano Baitrunners, which I bought many years ago from Brentwood Angling Centre – actually I remember how happy I was when they were delivered. They were superb and, as far as I was concerned, I was the bee’s knees for owning a set. The classic double-handled design was, and remains, iconic, and very many models have followed. One of the latest versions is this XT-RB, available in 6000, 8000 and this 10000 version.
