Penn Affinity Ltd 7000 Live Liner Reel

Marc Coulson’s verdict...very impressive and exceptional value for money.

When it comes to reels it’s very easy to not look beyond Shimano and Daiwa but while these two giants undoubtedly still dominate, there are some great alternatives.
Penn is one such company that is growing its presence in the UK, but did you know it’s already a huge reel brand elsewhere? Penn has real pedigree and in the Affinity its obvious expertise shine through.
It’s an extremely smooth performer and every bit of it feels solid and reliable.
The long, tapered spool is designed with casting in mind and the relatively slow oscillation and great line lay adds to its performance further.
The Live Liner refers to the free-spool facility, which I’ve found to be smooth and reliable. The front drag isn’t super-responsive like some far more expensive reels, but with the free-spool facility it doesn’t need to be.
So far, in use as just a single reel (on my ‘third’ rod), I’ve found the Affinity to be a very capable performer. With a spare handle and spool in with the reel itself, and at a price considerably lower than some ‘top-end’ reels, I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending it to anybody reading this magazine. (MC)
