The compact big-pit reel has become a popular concept of late. All the casting ability and line capacity meets a more lightweight construction making them lighter.

The Crosscast from Daiwa is the latest introduction to this concept. Featuring many of the fantastic parts found on reels with a much higher price tag, the main feature is  the free-spool facility, which allows you to switch between fighting drag and free spool in just a flick. This is ideal for anglers wanting to upgrade their smaller reels to a larger one with similar free-spool capabilities. The main drag comes from the front of the spool, allowing you to make small alterations during a fight with a strong fish. Daiwa staples, such as the lighter AirBail bail arm and Twistbuster are as standard. Aesthetically, the Crosscast looks akin to many of the more expensive reels on the market but at just £129.99 it’s much more affordable.
