Free Spirit Hi 's' Rods

The TC boys get to grips with tackle and bait, testing them to the limit out on the bank. Here’s what they think…

Test period: Eight months

Marc Coulson says: There are few superlatives to describe my affection for the Free Spirit Hi-‘S’, and I have used the 3.5lb version for a very long time. More recently, I’ve had a set of 2.5lb versions made up, with proper ringing and cork handles, and was intrigued to see how these softer rods would perform.

I wasn’t disappointed and they’ve been an absolute pleasure to use. I’ve landed carp to just shy of 30lb on them and every one has been a brilliant experience. You get used to poker-stiff rods and when you then use something that actually bends it reminds you of what a pleasure it is to play and land carp properly.

Over the last few months I have only been fishing a small club water and these have accompanied me on every trip. They’re truly exceptional rods and, despite the hefty price tag, I would definitely recommend them if you want a top-end small-water carp rod.

Marc's Verdict
Performance: ★★★★★★★★★★
Value: ★★★★★★★★★★
Exceptional carp rods, but at a price
