Fishspy Fishspy Camera

Awesome! There are a few underwater cameras available these days but none that can do what the FishSpy does, and that is to beam live pictures back to your phone or device in real time.

What’s even more impressive is that it does so without the need for any phone signal, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi because it creates its own Wi-Fi signal unique to each unit and synced device. So, how does it work? Well, in layman’s terms, you cast it out as you would a marker float and let it up to the surface, at which point it will begin connection to the synced device. Once connection is established you can live view exactly what the camera sees. In clear, shallow water this will give you a live view of the bottom.

Now, here’s the clever bit. When you wind your line to lower the camera down through the water the signal will be lost, but the camera continues to record on a built-in SD memory card. Bring the float back to the top, re-establish the connection, and you can play back that recording, which will save as a file on your device. All of this without ever having to wind the float back in and plug in any leads. What’s more, it’s all remarkably quick. Setting the FishSpy up is a doddle, thanks to the simple process and easy-to-follow instructions, and it works with both Apple and Android devices, albeit at slightly different maximum ranges on each for some reason.

On my local club water, where, even with polarised glasses, the clarity is only good enough to see down a couple of feet, our test unit has been a revelation and I have found out more about the lake in a couple of hours than I had in my previous 15 years fishing the venue!

I haven’t yet gained the courage to cast it out in my ridiculously weedy syndicate for fear of snagging it or, worst case, losing it. This would be my only fear and, for this reason, the folks at FishSpy recommend that you use at least 50lb braid on your setup. I’d still be a little reticent on my lake but, realistically, how many anglers fish anywhere that weedy, so it really won’t be an issue for most reading this.

At the time of writing, the FishSpy is on a special offer of £199.99 (previous price £250), which is worth every penny, especially if it helps you unlock the secrets of your lake. (MC)
