Fishhunter Directional 3d

Let me begin by saying that I have only been using this on and off for two months and by no means am I claiming to be an expert in the technology this device utilises.

However, that said, it is insanely cool and equally, if not more, practical than it may first appear. So what is it? It’s a small, compact and completely portable fish-finding device that also relays depths, substrate and temperature straight back to your hand-held device, which in my case was my Android smartphone. Firstly I was surprised at how easy it was to set up. Now although I’m only 25 I have got the head of a technophobe well and truly bedded in but this couldn’t be easier. I charged it like the manual said, dropped it in the water to activate it, searched for the self-sufficient Wi-Fi signal, connected, opened the free to download app, and it was ready. It really is that easy. There are a bundle of features that this device utilises and and although I haven’t trialled them all in vast detail here is what each of the relevant modes does, excluding the ice fishing flasher because I don’t believe I will ever be drilling through ice to catch a carp. However, if I need to I know I can!

3D Fishing

This is a very quick way of identifying the bottom, where underlying features such as weed beds begin and end, and keeping you aware of the depth and if there are any fish movements over a much larger area. Different colours are used to identify different depths, making it a very easy function to use.

Directional Casting

This is one of the features I have enjoyed using the most, probably because it is one of the most effective, and I just seem to understand it. Utilising five separate transducers, the device portrays as a split screen showing each individual depth below each transducer and when a fish appears the nearest transducer will flash red. Once it has flashed red, you can then click on the icon and a separate screen will appear showing you the dedicated depth, including what depth the fish is, what level the weed rises to and temperature. This is so in-depth I actually spend a lot more hours looking at my phone and having a play than I do getting the rods out.

Bathymetric Mapping

If you are an angler who fishes the same venue over time or even has a campaign, then this feature will benefit you greatly. Either by trolling if you have the luxury of a boat or simply by reeling the device backwards, you can begin to build your very own map indicating depth and bottom contours. It is easy to navigate back to the exact spot time and time again by GPS, ensuring you are always on the money. When scanning a large area you can then choose a more specific spot within an area and retrieve a detailed breakdown ensuring you really are aware of what you’re fishing over.

3D Structure Mapping

As opposed to the bathymetric map, this is a 3D view mode particularly relating to contours. You can still use GPS and it is recorded by trolling or reeling the device over an area instead of a line showing the route you took around your chosen water body. This is a full screen of depths showing indentations and depressions which are often fish-holding hotspots.

In all honesty I have not done this product anywhere near the justice it deserves in just a mere few hundred words. However, I want to give you a breakdown of the many features this device boasts and with continued use I look forward to perhaps putting a video together showing it in use. Overall it has been a really eye-opening experience to play around with this, and although it may seem like a hefty initial investment the amount of use and data you can extract is priceless, it’s as simple as that. Supplied with instructions, a device holder, charging lead and cord for attachment, this has got to go on your Christmas list, and come January your angling journey will begin all over again.
