Cygnet Prodding Stick

As a big-pit angler, I’m always mucking around on the boat or in my waders looking for that special spot, so I was the best candidate to test the new Cygnet Prodding Stick.

What I first liked was its lightweight design and the fact that it floats. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly and easily it was to recognise the difference in the bottom substrate. Each section is clearly marked in 1ft increments to give you an accurate depth and it attaches by a screw thread, which is easy to do, even with cold and wet hands.

There are two prodding attachments, one being a larger, round screw cap that with the larger surface area gave a much clearer and direct feel. The other is a point, which is perfect to either leave the prodding stick out as a temporary marker or good at identifying whether I was in silt, clay or mud, because it would build up in the hole running through its middle.

When fully erected you can measure depths of up to 17 feet, which was more than adequate, although more sections would be useful because there are a lot of deeper areas that I would like to investigate. That said, adding more sections could result in it becoming less sensitive and rather awkward to manoeuvre.

I really enjoyed using this stick and it definitely helped me with deciphering the bottom topography and make-up. However, I do think that there’s definitely a market to sell a few extra add-ons, such as a small rake or scythe, which could be placed on the bottom to help clear or finely trim your desired spot.
