Upon initially picking the reel up, it’s hard not to be impressed by the feel of the reel – it’s insanely lightweight due to the use of Shimano’s super-light, yet incredibly strong Ci4+ carbon fibre reinforced resin used for the body and rotor.A quick spin of the handle once again doesn’t disappoint, largely thanks to Shimano’s ever-growing list of technologies that have found their way into this reel. However, where things really impress is the fact that the reels continue to feel buttery smooth even when loaded under significant tension, such as when cranking large leads in from range or playing a hard fighting carp. The likes of Infinity Drive and Silent Drive ensure this smoothness, while the trademark HAGANE Gearing and X-Ship technologies result in a durability to the reels that means they can withstand many years of hard use.

One area where the Ultegra line-up has always excelled is in the casting department and this continues to be the case with the new Ultegra XR, thanks to the large diameter AR-C spool, combined with Super Slow Oscillation 5. These systems ensure perfect line lay, reducing friction during the cast and maximising distance. Additionally, a parallel body and Rigid Cast construction ensures the feel remains securely in position, without the risk of flexing on a big cast. On the bank, this translates to effortless, long-range casts.Shimano has also incorporated its Hi-Speed Drag system, allowing for rapid adjustments on the initial take, while still providing ample adjustment in the fight. The Cross Carbon drag system is buttery smooth, with no jolts or stutters, giving you confidence in handling even the most spirited battles.

After several outings, the reel still operates as smoothly as the day it was unboxed. The waterproof drag and X-Protect water resistance feature ensure that the reel withstands the elements, be it rain or big pit waves splashing up on a big wind.
