Gardner Point Doctors

TC reader Aaron Lends says: There’s no shying away from the recent trend for hook sharpening,
but in all honesty I wasn’t that sold because I don’t expect to buy a packet of hooks and then sit there sharpening them; it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Well that was until I received the original Point Doctor and the Point Dr 2 from the guys at TC. I found that with these very forgiving instruments I didn’t have to create a new needle-sharp point allowing me one fish a hook, but they are fantastic at touching up hooks that I had already had takes on, thus prolonging their life.

I start with the much coarser Point Dr 2 (the red one), which takes a fine layer of hook coating off with every swipe. The forgiving nature of the material allows me to add pressure without running the risk of turning the point over; a common problem that I have seen with other inexperienced hook sharpeners like myself when using much fiercer files.

Once I have attained the level of sharpness I am happy with, I finish it off with the original grey Point Doctor. This removes an even finer layer of coating, which helps in polishing the finished hook. Surely the less friction on the hook the easier it goes in, right? Well that’s my theory anyway.

Aaron Lends’ verdict…
Fantastic products that I’m glad I got to use.
