New 40 Caught

Previously unknown gravel pit stunner banked at Midlands fishery.
Leicestershire has a new 40lb carp on the radar, following the capture of a previously unknow fish from a gravel pit fishery.

The stunning looking 40lb 2oz mirror was captured from Celtic Lakes Frisby near Asfordby by the venue’s tackle shop manager Mark Slade during an impromptu overnight session on the complex’s Sailing Lake.

“I’d been watching a few fish right in the corner of the lake by the sailing club for the last couple of days and I was desperate to get on them,“ said Mark. “For various reasons I couldn’t though. Luckily a last minute change of circumstances allowed me to do a quick overnighter and the fish came at around 10pm.”

With the fish in the net, the biggest ever recorded from the ex-gravel pit, Mark put a call into fishery manager Chay Jackson to come and take photographs – which took a bit of persuading.

“I didn’t quite believe it when Mark told me how big it was,” Said Chay. “There have always been rumours of big fish in the water, but to be honest I didn’t really pay much attention, I tend to go on what has actually been caught. I’ve seen some proper lumps around the lake, but when I went down to the lake and we weighed it again at 40 I was still shocked.”

Mark fooled his fish, which dwarfs the previous 42acre lake’s best of 33lb 12oz, using a Five Star Baits banana and seed boilie fished on a stiff hinged rig and presented close to a marginal reed bed right on front of the fishery’s club house.
