Hitting A Snag

Question: When fishing near to snags, how much drop should you have on the bobbin? Charlie McConville, via www.totalcarpmagazine.com

Marc Coulson says: First things first, Charlie. If you are fishing close to snags then be absolutely sure that you are fishing as safely as possible. Don’t cast too far into snags because you may not get your rig or any hooked carp back out again. There’s a simple motto – if you’re not absolutely sure that you’re fishing safely then don’t fish there.

Okay, so once we’ve established that you are indeed fishing responsibly, then the answer to your question is no drop at all. Tighten your clutch (NEVER leave a Baitrunner or free spool engaged), fish with tight lines and don’t leave the rods. You cannot afford to let the carp reach the sanctuary of the snags because it may become stuck in them. Don’t give ’em an inch!
