It’s always a pleasure making my annual trip to the ESP headquarters in Oxfordshire, but when I headed down there earlier this year it was with a particular feeling of anticipation. I I was champing at the bit to see its three big product launches, namely the Onyx reels, Barrel bobbins and these Cryogen hooks. ESP has, for me, always produced superb hooks in patterns that are useful to carp anglers. They were, as far as I remember, the first to introduce odd sizing (3, 5, 7), which many companies have followed suit in more recently.

Korda Mini Rig Safe Combo

I owned one of the original Rig Safes but found it a bit bulky. However, Korda’s newer versions are spot-on. One of these is the Mini Rig Safe Combo and I can’t wait to fill this one with a few rigs of my own. We love this! The smaller size, compared with the bigger Rig Safe, which has also been redesigned, is ideal for storing shorter rigs, up to eight inches, and will hold 30 at a time.

A friend who I carp fish with, and who is as fussy as me when it comes to mono lines, has been using this for a little while and absolutely loves it. So, when it came to reviewing it here, I was keen to find out for myself what it was all about. Another ringing endorsement was that when I spoke to Gardner, I was told that the 15lb had, at the time, completely sold out! Fortunately, we already had a spool in the office. On the rods, the line behaves perfectly, sinking really well, casting as well as you’d expect from a 15lb line and feeling a lot less stretchy than some.

Being able to manoeuvre your baits into inaccessible places can sometimes be the difference between a bite and a blank and, in this 12m pole, Cygnet has come up with the perfect way to do so.
