Luke Kennard’s latest blog heralds a change in approach to his carp fishing Recently I’ve had some amazing news; I’m going to be starting a little family with my partner, and am due to become a father in October. The build-up to the birth of my child in conjunction with working away has meant that fishing opportunities were going to be at a minimum. This has been a bit of a shock to the system as I’m used to getting out on the bank at least two or three times a week, but a welcome change at that. When preparing for an overnighter or a weekend session I always give myself the luxury of arriving early, allowing myself time to find the carp.

In this month’s instalment, Ian talks to us about how he attacks a night carp fishing session and how you can do it safely and efficiently. After speaking with Deputy Editor Dan Murrell about this feature and our planned night time escapade I was immediately looking forward to a night on the bank, after all it is one of the major bonuses of being a carp angler, being able to use the often neglected hours of darkness to help up your catch rate and most of all expand your carp fishing experience. Dan wanted to know if my carping approach changed at all, the tactics, baits and techniques I apply in the day, do they still work at night or do I have to change my plan of attack. Well in a nutshell no, my rigs bait and tactics are to catch carp and this doesn’t change if the sun is bright in the sky or the moon is on the horizon, after all, do your feeding habits or senses change? Because from my experiences the carp certainly don't.

Make Your Own Luck Mr consistentJACK FUNNELLruns us through how he catches carp wherever he goes, the rules he sticks to and the edges that he uses to guarantee success. The guys at Total Carp asked me to run through the thinking and tactics I employ that often lead to me banking a number of fish from varying venues around the UK, and how a particular mind-set can also help you too. With this said, it is hard to single out just one particular thing or reveal a certain edge; not because I am a secret squirrel, but because I don’t really know what it is that I do that would be considered different from the norm. I don’t really pay too much attention to others, but seeing how much information there is on the internet, it would surprise me if most anglers didn’t understand the basics of carp fishing.

From Dusk ‘Til Dawn A busy work and family life, combined with a burning passion for carp fishing, Duncan Arrandale believes that you should make the most of the hours of darkness while on the bank. I’ve been a carp angler for more years than I care to admit to, and one thing that I think is hugely underutilised are the hours of darkness. This is obviously exaggerated in the winter months, but even in the warmer months where it stays light until 8pm and onwards I see time and time again that people do not make the most of their time on the bank during these periods. The lake is often quieter, the surrounding roads will become quieter too, and there are many things to exploit during this time.

Lee ‘Mozza’ Morris shares some of his finest tips for catching carp up in the water on the often-overlooked tactic of zig-rig fishing During spring and early summer zig rigs can be an incredibly effective method and one that will often outfish any other tactic that you have at your disposal. In recent years a lot has been written about the use of zigs and countless sections on DVDs and films on YouTube have covered their use, yet still, the vast majority of carp anglers do not use them. Why? Well, I’m not really sure. Laziness? Maybe.

Carp hauler Steve Cliff reveals a devastating rig that he has been using for over a year and has accounted for an incredible number of carp… Ever since I can remember I kept changing pop-up rigs; I have never been able to settle on something that I have a great deal of confidence in. Most of my fishing has been done with small 12mm pop-ups balanced, but there is certainly a time and place for using pop-ups. I have spent years trying to find something that is low to the lake bed, doesn’t involve relying on putty or fiddling around with stiff materials and which works exactly how I want it to. The spinner sits perfectly on the bottom It all started when I had a look at some of the new products from Korda.

Marv Wait looks at how to make the most of fishing the public waterways, which many anglers shy away from too often. However, with enough effort, it’s possible to unlock some of the jewels. When many people talk about fishing big waters they often refer to large, windswept gravel pits and the like. However, most fail to notice that canals are some of the largest carp waters in the country.

One more sleep until the Nash Mega Social weekend, an angling experience organised in order to support research into KHV to help protect future the generations of angling. The money used to purchase the tickets for the weekend was put towards funding research into the genetics of KHV, taking the first step towards breeding carp which are resistant to the virus. Preparation is critical prior to any session, especially when you face a new challenge on a new water. Hours of tying rigs ready for all situations it was essential to find some more information on the water; catch reports and photos of the lake were reviewed and I even managed to get my hands on information regarding water depths for each swim.

Tom Makerexplains how to make your money go further when it comes to bait, revealing top little edges to help you spend less and catch more…. One of the most frequent questions that I get asked is how to get around the price of bait. The subject is a tricky one because I do feel that it is one element of carp fishing that should never be compromised or taken lightly. Bait is so important and is a key part to catching lots of fish, and regularly too.

We catch up with young gun JACK FUNNEL, who has been on fire of late, and ask him what to focus on in a bid to bank more carp this June. 1. Check The Snags When it warms up, the fish will be spending lots of time in the shaded and safe areas. They won’t be there all the time but it is certainly worth checking them out.

Dave Magalhaes is one of the best floater fishing anglers around and he reveals how he goes about fishing for carp off the top. Nowadays I am not blessed with much time. It can be as little as an afternoon or an evenings fishing. In the colder months this can be really tough but now it’s lovely and warm, it’s possible to get a bend in the rod with just a few hours at your mercy.
