Quick Questions With… Frank Warwick (Video)

The long-time carp catcher and bait legend is in our spotlight this time.

Three words to describe yourself?
Reliable, determined and genuine.

Who do you admire most in carp fishing?
Rod Hutchinson and Jim Gibbinson in the early days, and now Tim Paisley.

Scariest moment on the bank?
I was in France around November time and after a previous good year, we set about mass baiting. The water was low so we waded out through the mud flats, and after my friend began to sink upto his chest I tied to help him, and before we knew it we were both slowly sinking… three hours later we lost our chest waders but managed to get ourselves out!

How long have you been carp fishing?
Since 1970… 48 years!

How did you start carp fishing?
I convinced my dad to buy a Woolworths fishing starter kit and after catching roach and perch on the local river it soon led on to targeting carp.

Other sporting interests?
I used to race motorcycles at a national level and had some very big accidents indeed, which ended that career. I also like UFC, boxing, martial arts, and am a Man United fan.

One day left to go fishing, where do you go?
Italy, the weather is nice and plenty of big carp.

Worst fishing related injury?
I have had far too many; when I was fishing with Lee Jackson on the Cons I found an old Gardener baiting needle and after throwing it in my pocket I sat down quickly and it went straight inside me, it was like being stabbed!

Best three anglers you’ve worked with?
Martin Bowler is a great all-round angler, Terry Hearn is a superb countryman and there are just too many to mention!

Favourite moment in your carp angling career?
Catching the fish that later became the world record mirror, the Scar fish! I caught the big missing leather with it on camera and both were my first-ever 50-pounders! What a brace that was.

Three things you’d never go fishing without?
Tea bags, a good sleeping bag and I love sandwiches!

Any regrets?
I have one, and that was I never had the foresight to start my own bait company. I came up with the original fluoro baits and fishing singles was a new idea then, but I never followed it through.

Who’s the biggest character you've met in fishing?
Rod Hutchinson takes some beating.

What are your favourite bits about carping?
I love all of it: the people, the places and the moment a storm moves in when you are all tucked up in your bivvy!

Your least favourite bits?
Winter sessions when your hands are frozen, nothing has happened and you need to pack up!

Tell us a secret?
Nah I’d best not, I don’t want to incriminate myself.
