Mobile approach pays dividends. Sticky ace Rob Shanks enjoyed a session to remember last weekend, after a switch to stalking tactics paid dividends in grand style. He explained: "With the wife and kids away for the weekend I decided to get a rare 48-hour session in on my Norfolk syndicate water. "I'd baited a swim a few days previous, and on arrival it was clear the fish were in the area, but what looked like an odds-on bumper session turned into a bit of a head-banger.

Experts reflect on capture of world-record common. The carp world is in shock today, following reports of the capture of the world’s biggest ever common carp – a 100lb 8oz beauty. Little is known about the captor, Colin Smith other than that he comes from Croydon in South London – and banked the fish while on a week's carp fishing holiday at French venue, Etang la Saussaie. Understandably, Colin has asked to be left alone while finishing his week's holiday, before facing the world's carp fishing media when he returns.

100lb 8oz fish is new world best!Colin Smith set a new world record yesterday, after banking a 100lb 8oz monster common carp from France’s Etang Saussaie, in the Champagne region of France. The fish comes agonisingly close to the full world record of 101lb 4oz, which was a mirror caught by Romanian rod Roman Hanke, from a French water last year. Korda ace, Damian Clarke is said to have banked the same fish back in 2011, at a weight of 88llb – but it has since clapped on weight at the French super venue, taking it to its now epic proportions. Details are yet to emerge of the angler who caught it, but it is thought that Colin Smith tempted the beast from Peg 14 at the venue.

String of quality fish for Taska rod. Kieran Panchal enjoyed some great sport at Birds Green Top Lake, taking four good fish, the best being a pristine 23lb mirror. The Taska-backed rod explained: “I arrived early to an almost empty lake, with only one more angler present. I decided to set up in a swim that fishes very well at this time of year, around the riverbank side of the island, after hearing that this was the swim that was doing most of the damage over the past few weeks.

Due to the wild nature of many places that I fish, this extending landing-net handle has done me no end of favours, usually on high, steep banks and where there is a lot of marginal vegetation. It’s also a big edge when netting fish hooked on long zigs. The length adjusts far more than others I have seen, with the total extended length a whopping 12 feet. Best of all, it stays rigid enough to make sure it’s not awkward to use.

When I first saw this line, and noting immediately the price compared with many others, I wasn’t sure how good it could be when it costs so little, relatively. Well, the first few uses immediately dispelled any concerns and it continues to perform well. Good knot strength and abrasion resistance are coupled with a decent diameter. I use the 17lb at short range on a local club water and it’s absolutely spot-on.
