I have lost count of how many baits I have tested in almost 12 years of working on the DHP carp titles, but it’s well into the hundreds, and every now and then I take one out that immediately impresses. Previous examples have included Mainline’s Cell, CC Moore’s Live System and Nash’s Amber Strawberry, all of which have also stood the test of time since my initial reviews. I’ve just added another bait to this illustrious list – The Krill. It’s been talked about for a very long time and many of the Sticky anglers have had some impressive results on it, but it was only this spring that I managed to get my hands on some to put through its paces.

When I first received the CAST’IZM I thought it had been sent in error. It looked and felt sublime but I wrongly assumed that it was a heavy-duty feeder reel, so I e-mailed Stephen McCaveny at Daiwa to ask where it needed to be. There was an apology, but not for having sent it, more for not having told me he’d done so. It turns out the CAST’IZM is the latest stunning reel that Daiwa has launched onto the carp market and it appears to be a revelation.

I have mixed opinions on these two hook links, the soft version of which I really like and the stiff one I really don’t. Okay, so the best bit first; the Camotex Soft is easy to use, strips nicely, has a nice diameter (I’ve tested the 15lb) and the camou finish is an improvement on Fox’s Coretex, which I’ve used before. Having used it two or three times now it’s never looked like letting me down. There are some excellent coated braids out there and this is definitely up there with the best of them.

Here’s quite a neat idea – instead of you having to buy separate tubs of barrel-shaped and round pop-ups, try these mixed tubs from Dynamite. There are four varieties, some of which I prefer the smell of to others, but each is extremely buoyant, albeit I wouldn’t term any as ‘fluoro’ bright. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because the brightest of bright baits are not necessarily always the most successful. With a mixture of sizes there is something here for most presentations, although the downside (compared with tubs of individually matched baits) is that if you favour one particular size they soon run out.

Expertly prepared mixed particles that leave an attractive cloud in the water column. An ideal component of a sloppy spod mix, ideal when using zig rigs and fishing up in the water. The sweet milky liquid will soak into pellets improving their attraction. The ideal spod mix additive or simply used on its own.
