I’ve been using this unique and interesting clip for approaching a year and I'm smitten. As well as a pair of conventional line clips, the centre of the body features spring-loaded ball bearings that the line can easily pull into. This combination gives multiple options in terms of the line’s tension. I’ve only felt the need to use it in either the clip or the ball bearings, never both, but it can be done if you want.

I, like so many people, used to own a set of the original Shimano Big Pits and benefited from years of their indestructible nature, huge cranking power and, of course, the Baitrunner system. More recent models have followed in this tradition but, like the original, they have been a little on the bulky and heavy side. This new version, made with Shimano’s excellent Ci4 material to reduce weight, is absolutely superb. Available in big and medium sizes there is a reel out of the two to suit all angling situations.

TC reader Dean Sharp says: "I already use this line so I was chuffed when Marc Coulson sent me three spools to review. It didn’t take me long to decide what to say because I absolutely love the stuff. "It’s relatively supple so is easy to use and, like any fluorocarbon, it is near invisible in water. When I first switched to using it around seven months ago my fishing was transformed when compared with using coated-braid hook links.

With an 85-litre capacity and regimented rectangular shape, this tackle bag has been designed specifically for use with carp barrows. The box-like nature allows it to fit seamlessly on a barrow while efficiently taking up minimum space. The overall dimensions are goliath, so fill it accordingly, otherwise it could end up being a very heavy piece of kit. With handy carry straps at both ends it’s easy to transport.

The compact big-pit reel has become a popular concept of late. All the casting ability and line capacity meets a more lightweight construction making them lighter. The Crosscast from Daiwa is the latest introduction to this concept. Featuring many of the fantastic parts found on reels with a much higher price tag, the main feature is the free-spool facility, which allows you to switch between fighting drag and free spool in just a flick.

First impressions were that they look great in their waterproof casing, which has been subject to some extremely harsh rainfall and even a brief dip in the margin, yet the alarms continues to work with no problem whatsoever. The heads are simple in design, with two dials, one for volume and the other for tone, allowing the head to be set to silent and only the receiver will alert you to any activity, which is great for when you want to be discreet, as discreet as you can be with the bright blue LED. The power switch operates as the sensitivity function, giving the choice of two settings, which has been more than ample for the scenarios that I have been fishing in. For ease, and being a little bit lazy, I like to keep my alarms attached to my banksticks.
