Cherry's Thirties

Duo of monsters from Gloucestershire lakes.
Gloucestershire holiday Mecca Cherry Lakes has double cause to celebrate this weekend after not one but two 30lb-plus carp were brought to its banks!

Venue owner Mike Kirsch explained: "David Kiff who was fishing Heron Lake, struggled all weekend and was fairly glum when I saw him on Sunday evening as up to this point he had not had a run. How things can change so quickly and with just one bite!

"When I next saw David the next morning he was beaming like the Cheshire Cat. At 6.00am on his last morning, he caught the current Cherry Lakes record fish, known as the ‘Broken Mirror’ at 34lb 6oz. This friendly fish, which fought David for some 20 minutes, was last out in August at 33lb 6oz. She is clearly on the ‘munch’ and is now at her weight of last autumn and is on track to be 35lb-plus, and set a new Cherry Lake record, if she is caught again later this year. David went home very happy.

"Paul Webber had a similarly enjoyable week on his second visit to Cherry Lakes. Fishing in Osprey Lodge, he has caught his new personal best, a pristine common of 31lb 2oz. Paul caught this beauty mid-afternoon by fishing close to the far bank on one of his own baits, and she fought hard all the way to the bank. In fact so hard was the fight, several of the lines from the angler in Heron were taken out!

"The common is the second fish caught over the magic 30lb-plus mark, which is why I am over the moon! As predicted in earlier updates, the fish are growing well and responding to the combination of our feeding programme and anglers' baits, with many known fish being 2lb to 3lb up on their weights over last year. We fully expect to have up to 10 carp swimming around above 30lb this autumn. The only question is, how many of them will get caught?"
