TC reader Aaron Lends says: There’s no shying away from the recent trend for hook sharpening, but in all honesty I wasn’t that sold because I don’t expect to buy a packet of hooks and then sit there sharpening them; it just doesn’t make sense to me. Well that was until I received the original Point Doctor and the Point Dr 2 from the guys at TC. I found that with these very forgiving instruments I didn’t have to create a new needle-sharp point allowing me one fish a hook, but they are fantastic at touching up hooks that I had already had takes on, thus prolonging their life. I start with the much coarser Point Dr 2 (the red one), which takes a fine layer of hook coating off with every swipe.

Although there are so many alternatives these days, I must admit to still being a fan of leadcore. I don’t honestly think that using it has ever cost me a bite, so I’m in no rush to switch. There has always been an issue with safely setting up a helicopter rig so that the top bead is secure enough on the cast but will release the hook link in the event of a breakage. The Leadcore Stop Beads are designed specifically with this purpose in mind and they work brilliantly.

A firm favourite of our editor, Proper Job Pop-Ups are well used by many tip anglers. They’re extremely buoyant and contain proper attractors and additives, not just a pop-up mix and synthetic flavour. Kevin at Proper Job told us that this new one has the most ingredients he has ever put into a bait, which must really be saying something. He showed us the list and it is mightily impressive – these are no normal baits! We were sent three sample pots, in white, washed-out pink and washed-out camou brown, each in mixed shapes and sizes.

The new rod transportation system from ESP is as practical as it is protective. Utilising durable and hard-wearing materials, the system is both lightweight and compact without compromising on its strength or capacity. The quiver features a spacious pocket for the rod butt, which offers protection along the blank up to the reel seat, and the tip of the rod is secured via a Velcro/webbing strap. A chunky and durable zip allows easy access to the accommodating central compartment that is perfectly designed for a bulkier shelter, as opposed to the traditional quivers only taking thin, small, umbrella-like shelters.

Last month we looked in detail at the complete system available from Cyprinus, well here we will be solely focusing on the space-saving brolly variation. Utilising the new and improved Hydro-Tec material, which has been proven to resist water with a hydrostatic head of over 1,0000mm, the Magnetix is among the most waterproof and weather-resistant shelters in its price range. With a more efficient, compact, space-saving device, the eight-rib design offers oodles of room and, more specifically, valuable headroom within the 60in frame. With upgraded, black, powder-coated poles, the Magnetix looks as good as it sounds.

We are sad to announce the passing of David Hall – founder and chairman of David Hall Publishing. David died peacefully in his sleep this morning after a short spell in hospital. He was diagnosed with cancer almost two years ago and had spent the past 12 months at home being cared for by his wife, Cherry. Throughout that period, David continued to take an active role in the running of DHP and asserted that the only thing keeping him from the office was an arthritic ankle!Considered a maverick when he entered the angling trade as the private publisher of Coarse Fisherman magazine more than 30 years ago, David went on to publish several leading angling publications including Match Fishing, Pole Fishing, Coarse Fishing Answers, Total Carp, Advanced Carp Fishing, Total Sea Fishing and Total FlyFisher.
