Staying dry is key to staying warm and comfortable but waterproofs of old have always involved some sort of compromise. Although they keep water out, they often have you sweating on the inside. They’re also, traditionally, quite restrictive to movement. Vass’ new rainwear has successfully quashed these common bugbears, with the result being the best and most versatile waterproofs that we’ve tested in a long time.

Over the last season Sticky Krill has been one of the baits that everyone has been talking about, but we understand that not everyone can afford to bait up regularly with a boilie and spend a fortune to try and help achieve maximum results. For this reason alone, we decided to take three products from the existing Krill range that we not only have faith in but you can use to your advantage time and time again without breaking the bank. Several of us in the office swear by the Krill Wafters as one of the best solid-PVA-bag hook baits ever. The extra buoyancy aids in hooking and their pulling power is unquestionable.

Spring is often a tricky time of year when a five-season sleeping bag can be too much but, equally, a three-season bag just doesn’t cut it. Well, to accompany the ever-popular Stealth X-Lite bedchair, the team at JRC have been busy getting this new bedchair cover to market ready for spring. With a water-resistant outer layer the bedchair cover is perfect for spending a night under the stars without the risk of waking up drenched thanks to the rain or early morning dew. Internally, the cover benefits from a warm micro-fleece lining to ensure the heat produced within stays within, keeping the user warmer for longer.

No-one can question the bait authority that’s Gary Bayes, so when we heard that Nash was developing a bait that has been adjusted, tweaked and played with over the last six years by the man himself we were dying to have a look. The reason so much time and resources have been used in creating this bait is because of the pure research that has gone in to natural ingredients that are rich in vitamins, minerals and the essential trace elements. With a blend of over 40 spices and a dozen essential oils, this bait has been carefully constructed utilising puréed and pre-blended elements of which some have been time aged for up to two months to create the highest, most desirable feeding response. I’m sure that as you are reading this you’re thinking: “So what’s actually in it?” Well, high-quality krill, squid meal and soluble fish proteins have been used to create not only a rich nutritional profile but a formula that will produce results as a fully digestible bait all year round.

TC reader Aaron Lends says: There’s no shying away from the recent trend for hook sharpening, but in all honesty I wasn’t that sold because I don’t expect to buy a packet of hooks and then sit there sharpening them; it just doesn’t make sense to me. Well that was until I received the original Point Doctor and the Point Dr 2 from the guys at TC. I found that with these very forgiving instruments I didn’t have to create a new needle-sharp point allowing me one fish a hook, but they are fantastic at touching up hooks that I had already had takes on, thus prolonging their life. I start with the much coarser Point Dr 2 (the red one), which takes a fine layer of hook coating off with every swipe.

Although there are so many alternatives these days, I must admit to still being a fan of leadcore. I don’t honestly think that using it has ever cost me a bite, so I’m in no rush to switch. There has always been an issue with safely setting up a helicopter rig so that the top bead is secure enough on the cast but will release the hook link in the event of a breakage. The Leadcore Stop Beads are designed specifically with this purpose in mind and they work brilliantly.

A firm favourite of our editor, Proper Job Pop-Ups are well used by many tip anglers. They’re extremely buoyant and contain proper attractors and additives, not just a pop-up mix and synthetic flavour. Kevin at Proper Job told us that this new one has the most ingredients he has ever put into a bait, which must really be saying something. He showed us the list and it is mightily impressive – these are no normal baits! We were sent three sample pots, in white, washed-out pink and washed-out camou brown, each in mixed shapes and sizes.
