Venue Files - Crowsheath fishery

Stocked with various strains of carp, Crowsheath is well-known locally for its scaly bangers and regulars return time and time again in search of its residents. Approximately 400 carp averaging 18 to 20lb are present; approximately a third of these are over the 20lb mark including at least 10 known 30lb-plus specimens to 38lb. Alongside the carp are a handful of catfish to 120lb, plenty of pike to mid-twenties, roach, rudd and perch.

Featuring a predominantly clay bottom with a few gravel patches to be found, Crowsheath is of generally uniform depth and water of seven to nine feet is found in front of most of the 24 boarded swims. However, time spent with a marker float can be invaluable as there is a shallower area in front of swims 19 and 20, a raised bar between the two islands and another, wider bar perpendicular to the south side of the larger island between swims 5 and 6. These shallower areas are often a magnet to the fish during the warmer months and provide a raised area to present a hook bait to if the carp are not in the deeper water. With no weed present the abundance of overhanging trees and marginal rushes provide cover from which a well-placed bait will often be snaffled.

Regarded as an intermediate carp water, a little thought goes a long way for these pressured fish and a boilie tipped with corn fished in the margins accounts for a large amount of captures. Bright single hook baits and spodded particles also produce, as do zigs when the carp are up in the water. A well known winter water, if you’re after a bite in even the coldest of conditions, Crowsheath Main Lake tends to fish just as well in the winter months as it does during the warmer periods: catch it right and a big hit is on the cards.

Note: If you are lucky enough to catch one of Crowsheath’s catfish, please call the onsite bailiff on 07402 298218 as they are currently being removed from the fishery.
