Previously unknown gravel pit stunner banked at Midlands fishery. Leicestershire has a new 40lb carp on the radar, following the capture of a previously unknow fish from a gravel pit fishery. The stunning looking 40lb 2oz mirror was captured from Celtic Lakes Frisby near Asfordby by the venue’s tackle shop manager Mark Slade during an impromptu overnight session on the complex’s Sailing Lake. “I’d been watching a few fish right in the corner of the lake by the sailing club for the last couple of days and I was desperate to get on them,“ said Mark.

Question: Having caught a decent amount of sizeable carp i would like to think i treat them well after landing. They are weighed and photographed quickly and returned to the water, usually within 2 minutes. Some of the videos and clips on you tube, featuring very high profile carp heads, show the fish to be on the bank for longer than i feel comfortable with. What, in your opinion would be a safe time to have a fish out of the water? James Wright via e-mailTotal Carp editor Marc Coulson says: That is a very good question and you raise an excellent point, James.

Question: I'm in need of some advice and wondered if you could help. Due to work and family commitments ( a 1 year old son and twin girls just weeks away ) my time on the bank is very limited. What advice would you give me to be more prepared and make every minute count on the lake, so i can bag my target carp and also have that quality time with my family? Paul Gordon via e-mail. Total Carp editor Marc Coulson says: That sounds remarkable familiar, Paul.

Question: I'm fishing my clubs most pressured lake 16 acres. I asked around and heard pre-baiting selected spots isn't worth doing, what is the best approach when applying freebies in my case? Tom Dicker via e-mailTotal Carp editor Marc Coulson says: Nonsense! I have never been to a lake yet where pre-baiting didn’t work. In fact, it’s probably one of the the very best tactics there is for catching carp – provided you can get away with doing it. I suspect that whoever has told you that pre-baiting does not work is doing so as they don’t want you to do it, ie they don;t want you catching the carp!If you can find an area of a lake that you can apply even a small amount of bait to over a period of weeks then you will attract carp to this area.
