Dan Hawkes from FatFish Tackle proved he can walk the walk on a recent trip out with other staff from the shop. Six fish came out to 13 people… and Dan had three of them, at 27lb 2oz, 27lb 4oz and the best at 32lb 4oz. All the fish came to a new nut-based bait developed by FatFish with Solar Tackle’s Martin Locke – in fact it was so new Dan only picked it up on the Sunday, used it for the first time on Monday and caught straightaway! The bait, exclusive to FatFish, is called Crunchy Nut Crème, and there will also be a new fishmeal bait out soon. For more details contact FatFish Tackle, Canterbury, on 01227 733770.

Linear Fisheries is holding an open day on Saturday, May 10th, 2014. This outdoor event will be held on Brasenose Two Lake and is free to attend. There will be a number of exhibitors and well-known faces on hand to give all the advice you need on anything ‘carpy’, and some of the exhibitors will be selling. This one-day event starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm, hot food and drink will be available and there is ample parking, although there may be a spot of walking from the car, depending on how busy it gets.

When our samples of the Kutter (three sizes, 16mm, 20mm and 25mm) first arrived in the office I was eager to give one a go. I had a couple of kilos of boilies that I needed to feed alongside my particle mix but I didn’t want to put them in whole. I opted for the middle-sized Kutter and haven’t looked back since. Chopping these baits into halves was an absolute doddle, saving me a lot of time and wear on my fingers! The compact design allows it to be stored easily in a bait bucket or bag and, with one click, the handle opens out and is ready for use.

Chod rigs enable you to present bait pretty much anywhere but the hardest part has always been tying them to a precise standard. Well ACE has done all the hard work for you and Terry Hearn has selected all the components that are right for the job. Tied with its top-of-the-range materials, these ready-tied chods can be brought in barbed hook sizes 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in both short and long lengths. Tied using the ACE Razor Point SRC hooks, offering superior strength and one of the sharpest points on the market, the rigs incorporate the ACE Pop-Up Pegs, which can easily be screwed into your pop-up hook bait.

The TC team has been extremely impressed with the Razor Points, and we’ve all rated them as some of the sharpest hooks we’ve seen in a very long time. For me, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this issue, when you’re paying the sorts of prices that modern hooks command (these are over £1 less than some on the market), you’re entitled to expect them to be sharp straight from the packet. These do not disappoint, but more importantly, they are consistently sharp across all of the various patterns and in all sizes – the latter not being particularly true of some ranges. As usual, there is a Teflon-type coating, the camou benefits of which I have always doubted (on all hooks) but there’s no doubt that it makes the hooks smoother, so it’s presumed that they penetrate more easily.

I remember my first set of Shimano Baitrunners, which I bought many years ago from Brentwood Angling Centre – actually I remember how happy I was when they were delivered. They were superb and, as far as I was concerned, I was the bee’s knees for owning a set. The classic double-handled design was, and remains, iconic, and very many models have followed. One of the latest versions is this XT-RB, available in 6000, 8000 and this 10000 version.

We run our three, six and 12-months-on features in these pages but these scales have accompanied me on the majority of trips for over five years. If there is a better set of dial scales on the market then I haven’t seen them. In fact, take it from me, there isn’t! Okay, some may prefer personalised versions, but the scales themselves remain the same. Mine are 60lb x 1oz versions, more than ample for any carp that I am ever likely to encounter, in the UK at least, and they remain super-accurate.

Talk about the synergy between carpy gear and High Street fashion and one name springs to mind – Navitas. The Essex-based firm manages to combine what we carp anglers want from fishing apparel as well as making it look good away from the bank. Although not necessarily falling into my age bracket (I’m over 40, after all) the Alpha Quilt is right up the street of the younger generation of carp angler. The two lads on TC love this one and I’ve a feeling they’ll be fighting over it.

We featured the H-Gun Elevator in our Buyer’s Guide to unhooking mats in the February issue and were impressed with its combination of protection, ease of use and value. This newer Deluxe version is essentially the same model but offers larger dimensions to cope with carp in excess of 40lb. Don’t worry if you target smaller carp than that because an unhooking mat can only ever be too small, it can never be too big. Easy to erect, the Elevator folds up and down in seconds and offers total protection to the carp while being unhooked and made ready for those all-important trophy shots.

Try as I might, I cannot trim my gear down to the paltry amounts that other anglers seem to carry, particularly when it comes to terminal tackle. Yes, I’ve finished sessions thinking: “Well, I didn’t use this,” and “I needn’t have brought that,” but ultimately the just-in-case side of my brain wins and I still take it all the next time out. The one concession I have made is to swap my large Double F Box for a medium version, albeit still the double-sided one. This has made a big difference, not least to the weight of my rucksack, yet it still swallows up plenty of tackle, including a few bits that I will probably never need.
