African Adventure

Airline pilots bank giant African carp.
Airline pilots and Avid consultants David Wooledge and Nick Eccles have been travelling around the world in search of large carp.

Recently, while working in South Africa, the lucky duo managed to spend a couple of nights targeting one of the country’s impressive dams. With winter now in full swing in Africa, the trip was always going to be tough going but, after enduring sub-zero temperatures and frozen bivvies, the duo managed to bag a couple of very special fish. Knowing the fish weren’t going to be in the mood for large beds of bait, the pair opted to fish single hi-viz hook baits in a bid to nick a couple of bites. The tactic certainly worked because David landed a 37lb mirror and Nick banked a stunning fish of 42lb.

Both lads used Avid's hi-viz hook baits tipped with buoyant Corn Stops fished on a simple pop-up rig constructed from the Captive Coated Hooklink. They also used 3oz Distance Swivel Leads, Flat Clips and Pin Down Leaders.

Keep an eye on the Avid website for more incredible captures from these guys. They really do get around!
