If you spend this duration in other waders then you begin to sweat and when you take them off you would think there’s a leak, well no more. Having studied fisheries management at both college and uni, I have spent many an hour in waders, from heavy-duty ones with steel boots to the more lightweight PVC variety. When I received a message from Chris at Vass telling me about the new 305 breathable waders, I was a little sceptical that they would be bringing to the market an item that would be measurably different from the rest. That was until I wore them, and wow!I was ignorant to the concept of something being waterproof and breathable, but having worn these for over six hours at a time I know exactly what it means.

Staying dry is key to staying warm and comfortable but waterproofs of old have always involved some sort of compromise. Although they keep water out, they often have you sweating on the inside. They’re also, traditionally, quite restrictive to movement. Vass’ new rainwear has successfully quashed these common bugbears, with the result being the best and most versatile waterproofs that we’ve tested in a long time.

Having had great success with the Stash lightweight rainwear launched in 2013, ESP has given this range an update for winter. With the same waterproof outer layer but with the added extras of a quilted inner fabric, this is a superb winter suit. Featuring a peaked adjustable hood and high draught-excluding cover, it will stand up to even the most horrible of weather yet provide you with maximum visibility. On the chest of the jacket a pocket complete with rain flap allows you to store your essentials.

TC Reader Adie Turner says: I bought a pair of these on TC editor Marc Coulson’s personal recommendation and I have to say that I have absolutely loved them. So much so, in fact, that I asked Marc if I could write a review on them. They’re super heavy duty and have been the first waders to really cope with the hammer that mine have always received. I pretty much keep them on throughout my sessions, except for sleeping of course, so they are in and out of the water, up and down off gravelly banks and often covered in spod mix!The reinforced knee panel is an absolute godsend and the fact that they’re so easy to get in and out of completes an impressive list of what makes them so good.

These are the ultimate in quick-entry waders and allow you to literally jump into them and then into the water in an instant. Neoprenes do not allow you to do this, taking far too long to get on, albeit they will offer more insulation in really cold water. The 740 is Vass’ top-end chest wader with supremely robust material, chunky boot and protective knee panels. Everything you’d want in a chest wader and, despite the features and benefits, they’re priced extremely well.

Talk about the synergy between carpy gear and High Street fashion and one name springs to mind – Navitas. The Essex-based firm manages to combine what we carp anglers want from fishing apparel as well as making it look good away from the bank. Although not necessarily falling into my age bracket (I’m over 40, after all) the Alpha Quilt is right up the street of the younger generation of carp angler. The two lads on TC love this one and I’ve a feeling they’ll be fighting over it.

Skee-Tex has been manufacturing clothing and footwear for outdoor pursuits for years. The field boots are a classic combination of thermal winter footwear with the design of a sturdy reliable field-walking boot. With a rubberised waterproof foot section ensuring your feet remain dry, these boots are also fitted with a comfortable, laced, suede calf section that, although isn’t waterproof, will keep your feet toasty right down to freezing point. Within the boots there are removable liners made from English wool that provides unrivalled warmth and ingenious wicking fibres to stop your feet perspiring.

Considering how much we've seen these sell for in various shops this suit feels better than expected and has a few nice touches that belie its price tag. We're not fans of this style, where the fleece zips into an outer jacket. Sure, it gives you three garments in one but we find them a bit bulky and awkward. That said, it's personal choice and the Vantage is one of the better ones we've seen.

Having spent years watching our colleagues on the match and pole fishing magazines wearing Halkun Hunt’s clothing, I longed for the brand to launch into the carp market. The thing is, it was in no rush to produce green versions of the excellent kit, which featured Gore-Tex linings – the number-one waterproof and breathable fabric. Then, eventually, and exclusively to Yorkshire Carp, the green range was born and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a test set. A year on and that set is my go-to clothing in any even remotely inclement weather conditions throughout the year.

It’s that time again when all the fair-weather anglers say farewell to the bank and head to the warmth of their living rooms. However, for you guys brave enough to face the weather, we’ll let you into a little secret and a suit that will make your fishing even more pleasurable. Chub has managed to produce an all-weather suit that won’t break the bank but doesn’t compromise on quality. It consists of a jacket, trousers and fleece and offers a fantastic amount of protection from the harsh winter winds and the rain that we so regularly receive.
