The TC boys get to grips with tackle and bait, testing them to the limit out on the bank. Here’s what they think…CARP FISHING GROUP X LINERRP: £13. 95Website: N/ATest period: Six monthsJason Umney says: Although I use monofilament a lot, I recently swapped to fluorocarbon because I started fishing an intimate, gin-clear pit. The lake’s residents are cute and I’m certain that they spook from anglers’ main lines.

THE TACKLE BOX’S LEE JACKSON SAYS: I must admit to being highly delighted when this range of hooks was reintroduced to the market, albeit under the new Carp Spirit banner. I’d been using these for quite a while when, unfortunately, they became unobtainable, which is most annoying when you find something that you like and are confident in. Made from the highest-grade Japanese carbon steel and finished in a non-reflective PTFE coating, these hooks have a microbarb, are ultra-sharp straight from the well-designed protective box that they come in and maintain their sharpness even after a number of uses. My favourite pattern, and the one I’ve used most, is the Medium Curve Shank.

The Mugga pattern from Gardner has been around for a long time. Indeed, it was one of the first short, swept-shank versions to hit the carp market and its pattern immediately lent itself to multiple rig uses. As more and more companies started to produce similar hooks, the fashion turned to dull coatings and Gardner was a little slow to react with the Muggas at first. However, that was soon remedied when the company launched its Covert coatings onto several patterns of its popular hooks.

When I first saw this line, and noting immediately the price compared with many others, I wasn’t sure how good it could be when it costs so little, relatively. Well, the first few uses immediately dispelled any concerns and it continues to perform well. Good knot strength and abrasion resistance are coupled with a decent diameter. I use the 17lb at short range on a local club water and it’s absolutely spot-on.
