Three decades of trying sees angler bank amazing 40lb plus canal mirror. Carp don’t come much more impressive than this gorgeous 41lb fully scaled mirror – especially when they’re caught from the local canal. The fish, banked on the towpath of the Kennet and Avon canal, was caught this morning (March 1) by Wiltshire angler Bill Phillips and fulfills a 34 year dream for the long time British Carp Study Group member to catch a canal specimen over the magic 40lb mark. “I’ve fished the canals for carp for years, but this is by far the most amazing session I’ve had,” Bill told Total Carp.

St Johns delivers string of twenties as fish go on the feed. The carp of Linear’s St John’s pool are in feeding mood this week, a fact that top carper Kev Hewitt took advantage of to take ten fish haul from the day-ticket water. Topped by this beautiful 29lb 2oz mirror known as Mini Shoulders, St John’s regular Kev also banked five other 20s for a superb late February session to remember. Targeting a spot at 50yards range, the CC Moore-backed angler spodded out a small amount of Milkmini pellets and maggots to get the fish interested.

Massive 53lb plus specimen takes title of the biggest carp so far this year. One of the Midlands' most popular big fish venues has produced the heaviest carp of the year so far with a huge mirror banked at a weight of 53lb 8oz. Beating the previous biggest carp of 2012 - a fish of 51lb caught last week from Essex’s Fryerning Fisheries - the massive specimen was caught from RH Fisheries’ The Avenue in Shropshire, smashing the venue’s record by 4lb. Caught this weekend just gone (February 25) the carp came to the rod of Richard Griffith, product developer for tackle firm Shimano Normark, during a 24hour session that saw the angler also land two other fish of 30lb 4oz and 28lb 12oz.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Daren Welton and Total Carp has asked me to run a blog about my fishing exploits over the next few months. This will be updated on a fortnightly basis and hopefully you should be able to follow me and get a pretty good idea of what I get up to. Before we start, here is a brief insight into my carp fishing background:I started carp fishing 30 years ago, at the ripe old age of 12, and I knew then that I had found a side of fishing that fascinated me.
