It is quite obvious that if you want to stay warm throughout winter, then layers are most definitely the way to go. Probably the best combat trousers for winter fishing I have seen. A soft-touch thermal fleece lining makes these the perfect garment for wearing when out on the bank even when the wind is driving in. They boast two zipped side pockets as well as two rear and side Velcro pockets. Available in Medium, Large, X Large and XX Large.

With temperatures plummeting to as low as minus 5ºC at the time of writing this review, there is nothing I wanted more than a waterproof, thermal garment to keep me protected and I believe the team at Fox International has delivered the perfect solution. The Sherpa-Tec jacket combines some of the latest fabric advancements, bringing an affordable, functional and protective dual-layer clothing system to the market. Now some of you will be saying that at near £110 this isn’t so affordable. However, with the detailed and durable build quality that will last a good few seasons I would have to disagree.

Rambling through the dew-sodden grass is a regular occurrence when fishing and out on features, so what I needed was a pair of boots that would offer me protection but comfort when worn for long periods. Although these are not the lightest boots I have ever worn, they are by far the most protective so far. Constructed from full-grain leather with Vibram Trek rubber soles, the Hunter Boots are waterproof to above the ankle and breathable too, which is great if you run hot. While on the subject, the soles have been treated with Agion antimicrobial treatment that helps to eradicate that awful damp-dog smell; so keeping these in the house doesn’t cause me too much grief with the housemate.

As the name suggests these are extremely lightweight – 350g to be precise. For boots claiminging to offer insulating protection down to minus 30°C this is really impressive. Because the thermal liner is completely removable these are also sturdy EVA rubber Wellington-type boots for use all year round. Ideal for when you are wading through puddles and margins the ingenious design means they will float should they come off and with a useful rear kick-off plate they are easy to take off without the need for grabbing your boots and getting covered in mud.

Keeping warm and dry is essential in these cold conditions, and Wychwood has not disappointed with the release of the new Parka and Bib ‘N’ Brace, available separately. A 100 per cent nylon construction boasts an incredible 8,000mm hydrostatic head and an impressive 5,000g m2 breathability rating means you stay warm and dry for longer periods without the risk of sweating profusely inside, which actually helps you to regulate and control your internal temperature far more easily than before. Combining durable and long-lasting YKK front zips with a storm flap helps to ensure there is no unwanted water ingress when the weather turns wild. The Parka boasts no less than five pockets, while the Bib ‘N’ Brace is also fitted with two SBS zipped pockets for the valuables you wish to keep to hand.

Fortis was the first company to launch polarised glasses to carp anglers but with fashionable frames and at a price that we could all afford. The top-of-the-range Vistas take the brand into a different bracket, with genuinely advanced glasses more with function than simply form in mind. The lenses offer near-unrivalled clarity thanks to their thinner construction. Essentially, thinner lenses equal less distortion and it’s only when you compare these against your current, probably cheaper, glasses that you see the difference.

I love this three-quarter-length jacket (there are matching bib ‘n’ braces available too) because it’s not only waterproof but features a Sherpa-Tec fleece lining for that extra bit of insulation and warmth. It’s not going to get you through a Polar expedition, but that’s not its intended design, but it is ideal for the late autumn and into winter. If conditions get really Baltic then a bit of layering underneath makes it more than capable of seeing you through. Proper YKK zips feature, which is a must for me because this is the main area where clothing of this nature can fail, so well done to Fox for that.

With a whopping 10,000 Hydrostatic Head, this is about as waterproof as clothing from fishing companies gets, yet it’s both lightweight and extremely easy to pack away. Sealed zips feature throughout, which is essential in a suit of this nature, and these include half zips on the leg of the trousers to make them a doddle to get on and off without taking off your boots. It would be wrong not to mention the price here because this is a lot of money for a decent quality ‘stash suit’ of this nature but, let’s face it, they’ll probably actually sell for a little less than this as well. £119.
