River Carping ALFIE RUSSELL is renowned for fishing away from the madding crowds, but we managed to twist his arm to give us an insight into one of his previous river exploits. Over the last couple of years, I have found myself making the most of the river fishing that is close to my North London home. I started off by fishing on the Coppermill Stream, a man-made stream that runs through the Walthamstow Reservoir complex. This was the first taste of river carping that I ever really had.

It’s the best particle around and particularly comes into its own as the water cools. MARC COULSON reveals what makes hemp so great… ONE: Value For Money - Hemp is inherently decent value, especially if you take the time and make the effort to prepare your own. Consider how many grains you get in, say, even just 1lb of hemp and it is a considerable number. You can bait a very good area with just a couple of quid’s worth of hemp and, unlike boilies, it can hold carp in an area for an extremely long time.

Hook-Bait Approach There’s no need to spend bundles of money on bait. Quality over quantity is the order of the day and here’s how you can succeed with just a pot of pop-ups! The mighty single hook bait has been catching carp ever since the days of Frank Warwick on Redesmere chucking golf-ball-sized baits to showing fish. They have proven to be an effective tactic on venues up and down the country. As the temperatures begin to drop and the cold, long, dark nights make an appearance, bites generally become less frequent.

The Essex based Carp Team England Casting Coach is widely regarded as one of the biggest carp tackle casters in Europe, with fixed spool casts of over 263m on the tournament field and overhead casts in excess of 220m. About the appointment, Terry quoted “It’s an honour to be invited to work with RidgeMonkey and I’m excited to be able to assist in the development of their forthcoming end tackle range. In particular, mainlines are my specialist subject field and I will be working closely with the team to ensure that they are at the absolute top of the game: if any single product is not good enough, I won’t be signing it off” The former 3 times UK record holder will be a big asset to the brand as we expand our range in the future.

Spring time will soon be upon us and I for one am very excited, I think it is the best time of year to target the larger carp. The water temperatures will soon be starting to rise and the carp will be waking up from their winter slumber, they will soon be actively seeking a food source. This is when watercraft comes into its own, one of the most important tips I could give you is to take your time setting up, at the beginning of any session you should spend time watching the water, even if it takes several laps around the lake as location is key. Watercraft plays a huge part in my angling and I have seen far too many Anglers with their backs to the water whilst setting up, missing the opportunity to see signs of showing fish, be it fizzing and bubbling on the water’s surface to blatant fish topping.

Pellets may not be every angler’s first port of call at this time of year but with a bit of thought, you can really turn them into a great cold-water bait. . . Used far more in summer, pellets remain one of the very best carp attractors and feeds at our disposal, but with their high oil content, they lose their effectiveness in colder conditions.

Take a look at this incredible 64lb 10oz mirror landed on a Solar Top Banana pop-up by Solar Tackle field tester Fred Ducros. Fred was targeting a hard, private gravel pit that he'd been concentrating on for some time. Presenting a Top Banana pop-up hook bait over a spread of homemade boilies soaked in Top Banana Mega Big Shot Liquid did the trick on this occasion. With this test series we take a look at unhooking mats and of course, protection is paramount here. As much as we all love a pocket-friendly product, we honestly believe that this is one product that no angler should scrape on, ever! What we are looking for here is the complete protective package, how much padding is on offer, can the carp be retained for short periods without flapping off or out of the mat and how mobile the entire bundle is. Yes, before you say it, the carp we have used for illustrative purposes is rather large, measuring in at a whopping 84 centimetres long and 56 centimetres from dorsal fin to pelvic fin, hence the tight fit. Weighs: 2.
