Although significantly cheaper than the superb ArmaPoint range of hooks, the Kuro range is very impressive. There are several patterns available, not all of which I have used, but this one – a curved-shank design with a fairly thick gauge – is fast becoming my hook of choice for bottom-bait fishing. It’s very similar to the ArmaPoint SSC; in fact, the only discernable difference to my eye is that the coating isn’t quite so dull and non-reflective. It’s still very dark, which I like, and the hooks work brilliantly.
On the right venue I am a real braid fan and have advocated its use in certain situations for many years. There’s always been a trade-off, however, between a braid that casts well and one that sinks. Generally, you cannot have one without sacrificing the other. The 832 was first given to me to play around with last year, and it took me a while to spool it up.
In the search for a robust mono that would sink and not let me down in the weedier spots of my new syndicate, I was recommended the Syncro XT. After a good soak in warm water it spooled up really easily and, despite it being 15lb, it bedded down quite nicely on the spool. I’ve since used it on several occasions and it has performed exactly how I need it to. One particular carp decided to charge through a hefty marginal snag just prior to netting, but the line held firm despite lots of grating.
The Mugga pattern from Gardner has been around for a long time. Indeed, it was one of the first short, swept-shank versions to hit the carp market and its pattern immediately lent itself to multiple rig uses. As more and more companies started to produce similar hooks, the fashion turned to dull coatings and Gardner was a little slow to react with the Muggas at first. However, that was soon remedied when the company launched its Covert coatings onto several patterns of its popular hooks.

New khaki version of the brilliant Unleaded leader material. It’s extremely supple yet sinks like the proverbial stone. It’s also available in leader and hook-link breaking strains, making it hugely versatile too. Supplied on 20m spools.
Brand-new mono material that is super-stiff for use with chod rigs and other stiff-rig presentations. It’s so new, in fact, that no price had been set when we wrote this review! Available in gravel, weed and silt variations and in multiple breaking strains. For more information go to www. acecarp.
Although coated hook links do not feature heavily in my fishing, I quite like this one over the period that I’ve played around with it. As the name suggests, it is very easy to strip the coating away from the inner braid, which is both supple and colour-matched to the outer. In all, I like this stuff, especially the green 25lb version, a spool of which I have retained for future use!Marc Coulson RRP: £11. 99Website: www.
At the forefront of end-tackle design for many years, ESP continues to produce a wide range of extremely usable products, many of which offer a solution to the everyday problems faced by carp anglers. The most recent launch of new items includes the Chod Rig Sleeves, available in Camo Brown, Choddy Silt and Weedy Green, in packs of six. These are designed to keep your chod rig clear of the lead at the bottom of the leader when playing a carp. The inherent problem with a chod rig is that, without something above the lead, the rig slides right down the leader, potentially causing lost fish.
These resemble a ring swivel, but have two of the larger rings at one end. Designed for the ‘drop-off’ inline-lead setup, they’re perfect for the job and make assembling this system very easy and efficient. They feature an anti-glare coating and are supplied in packs of 10.
