22 Carp In 36 Hours

Couple enjoy manic stay at French holiday resort.
Simon and Donna Mercer from Salisbury have enjoyed a manic week at Moulin De Graf Fishery in France, banking 22 giant carp during their 36-hour stay.

On arrival, Simon spent plenty of time looking around the lake and studying the fish activity before deciding to fish two different swims. He chose to fish in a deepwater swim known as 'Twin Oaks’ for his morning and evening sessions and to fish a shallower swim called ‘The Meadow’ for his afternoons, when he hoped that the fish would have moved into the shallow water.

Simon kept both swims baited all week but only fished each one for a few hours at a time, giving him a total of 36 hours fishing. When he was on the lake he was 100 per cent focused on the business of catching fish. He would study every swirl and sign of fish, every knock on his line, and he converted that information into fish location. He continually changed his tactics until he worked out where the fish were and his approach paid off.

Donna is not (or was not) an angler and she was content to sit a watch. Then Simon had two fish on two rods at the same time, and Donna was tasked to lend a hand. It wasn’t long before she was helping with the netting, and then the photography, and it was just a matter of time before she was hooked and had to have a go. The end result was her banking a gorgeous little mirror at 22lb 12oz.

Fishery owner, Tony Senior was delighted that his guests had such an enjoyable stay: "Simon would have loved to catch a fifty, he would have settled for a forty, but alas he had to settle for a nearly forty at 39lb 2oz – which he was more than happy with!

"Their total catch of 22 fish included four commons from 24lb 7oz to 32lb 02oz, 17 mirrors from 22lb 06oz to 39lb 02oz, and the smallest of our koi at 16lb.

"This is the first time that this 39lb mirror has been caught and with it being over 35lb it entitled Simon to give it a name, so, as of now fish number 0035086 is known as 'Pumba'.

"When asked why, Simon said that he named it after the warthog in the movie 'The Lion King', because it is big and round and fought like a pig. I must admit it did take him 45 minutes to land it.

"It is always nice to see people enjoy their holiday and I look forward to their next visit. By which time Pumba will most definitely be a bigger, rounder 40lb plus."
