to me
Getting to the lake just before first light has always been something i have done since ive started fishing, this just gives you an advantage above everyone as you can see where the fish are in the morning and where to set up for the session ahead. Now where i set up wasn't where the bulk of fish were but i knew come dark they would push out of where they're holding to feed.
These fish where sitting in a small bay under some snags in the far end of the lake sunbathing. There was probably 10, 11 of them sotting there and probably around 7 of them were 30 plus. I also did see some infront of where i set up but not as many, so yes it was a risk but i knew i chose right as i didnt want to spook the fish in the bay and ruin my chances for the night ahead.
Generally speaking the bites come at night and first light so made sure everything was done before that happened. All 3 rods went out perfectly on a spot that is gravel and the odd bit if blanket weed just perfect for my favourite presentation. A ronnie with a braided boom section on a lead clip set to drop of take. I put 20 spombs over the top for the reason that the fish love bait in here and they're spooked by the spomb so wanted to make sure there was enough so i didn't have to re bait before dark and make sure if the crays got any i didn't have to either.
The day past and into night we go. Started getting liners around 10pm jus the few odd ones a few bleeps and stop again, mostly crays messing with thw hookbait. This carried on till 11.30 where it stopped. Normally that means the carp have moved into the area and have spooked the crays. This was the case i from midnight till 5am i could hear fish show one after the other not far from where i was fishing. Around about 5 5:30am i had the bite. A ripping take that kept going for a soild minute, flat rodding me as soon as i lifted into the fish. But after the massive run at the start i just came straight in after and into the net. Left it in the met for a little while i set up the mat, scales and camera equipment for self takes. Bringing the scales round to 32.8 a good morning. Sent the picture to a few mates that fish the same lake and no one has seen this fish before, the only picture we have is an old picture for the 90s but its doesnt look the same, me and the others that fish here put it down as a fish that has or went missing for 20 years as it was in perfect condition, mouth, body and fins where just perfect like it was stocked yesterday. But with it being a big water its common for this to happen. To say i wad blow away is an understatement.
