Having changed my car from a family-sized MPV to a much smaller model I have had to rethink some of my tackle items. My new motor is still an estate, but it’s a very compact version so, sadly, my previous barrow, which I really liked, had to go. The Metro is the smallest in the range and is ideally suited to anglers with smaller cars or who don’t take mountains of gear. It’s performed really well, and it copes comfortably with my bedchair (I open the legs to form side arms on the barrow), rucksack, rod bag, bivvy and bait bucket.

Daiwa’s Basia receives plenty of coverage and has many admirers, yet the ISO seems to be afforded considerably less airtime. Having tested a set of these over a period of months (and having previously also used Basias) I think that the ISO is worthy of similar acclaim. So important to carp anglers, the ISO looks sublime. The black finish with red trim offers an air of luxury and the wooden handle sets it all off perfectly.

Short for Nano-Carbon Technology, NCTs are Sonik’s first foray into the high-end rod market. They certainly look the part and the details gained from Sonik’s Ian McCormack were just as impressive. “The rod blank is the key feature. A completely new type of carbon is used, boasting a decrease in the amount of resin, while maintaining reliable strength,” explained Ian.

The single biggest disadvantage with a brolly is that the inner support frame compromises the internal space. Sitting on your bedchair and watching the water generally means that you either have to suffer backache or sit as far forward as possible. That’s fine in the summer, but not great in the rain. The standout feature of the Supa Brolly is its unique STS mechanism.
