Marc Coulson’s verdict - Early signs are extremely good. 3. 5/5
Okay, first things first, I have only actually had these out a handful of times because my fishing doesn’t warrant their use at the moment. Small waters and wary carp do not respond to thrashing the water to a foam with a marker and then spodding over the top.
BARGAIN!Whether you like a 12ft, 13ft or a smaller 9ft or 10ft wand, you want to enjoy the experience and, new for 2016, the SK3 rods tick that box. With a very progressive middle to tip action, the 9ft variations are ideal for anglers targeting small waters or who like to fish at close quarters.
Our designer, Katie Griffiths, has started to carp fish and found that shorter rods are actually easier to control, thus resulting in increased accuracy and casting, so bear that in mind for any newcomers to our sport, or equally if you would like the children to get involved.
The rods are constructed from a powerful low-resin carbon fibre blank incorporating a 1K carbon weave on the butt section.
Extra muscle for heavy-duty work
12ft 6in for increased casting distance

I know what you are thinking, a carp rod for under £40, yeah right. Well they are as cheap as that and they certainly are fully functional carp rods.
Lightweight and well balanced, these will perform in the majority of modern carp angling scenarios. Of course, if you wish to cast 160 yards then I would recommend not looking at these.
The X. S. M, or X-treme Spod and Marker, is a specifically designed tool for baiting and feature finding at range.
The 13ft blank offers a progressive power action so you can feel the power building up in the blank before it transfers down the line, sending your lead or Spomb effortlessly into the distance.
GUEST REVIEWER Editor of Advanced Carp Fishing Magazine Max Hendry’s verdict: Faultless casting and weighs next to nothing. 4/5
I got a set a Cast’izm reels in for review last year. I was after a small, compact reel that would be ideal for using on canals or small waters with my shorter 10ft rods.
Like the Cast’izm QDA reel the Mag Sealing ensures the reel remains super-smooth no matter how much abuse you give it.
Awesome!Marc Coulson’s verdict - Extremely impressive – far better than I expected. 4/5
It’s been a very long time since I used a multi-piece rod and, if I’m honest, I didn’t think too many companies still made them, let alone realise how popular they still are.
Ideal for keeping in the back of your car, taking on holiday or just for the angler with limited storage space, for me they served a purpose but were never actually that good. However, I was hugely surprised by this four-piece TX Compact.
Small reel with big-pit attributes
Boasts line clip and instant anti-reverse
Complete with machined aluminium spool, rubberised handle
Super-compact lightweight body

Dan Murrell’s verdict A real joy to use and in my opinion they look pukka !
As I have written in previous reviews, I prefer using a longer than conventional rod, favouring 12ft 6in, 12ft 9in or 13ft models. Having used 12ft models for a few months I was quick to change when a set of Terry Hearn Distance 12ft 9in 3. 5lb test curve came into the office for a Used & Abused review.
Aesthetically, I think it is fair to say that ESP has hit the nail on the head.
Read any rod manufacturer’s brochures and they’ll describe the perfect carp rods that boast huge casting potential as well as the ability to play fish under the rods tips. Whether or not this is even possible is open to debate.
Shimano’s description of the XS1 Intensity touches on that but focuses on the build of the blank and its tip recovery, something that is vital in casting accuracy and distance. It also boasts of a super-slim blank thanks to Shimano’s Cap T technology, whatever that is!
In reality, the boasts are pretty accurate.
Spodding and marker float work require an altogether different capability from a reel, compared with a general fishing one, as more anglers are realising.
Daiwa has produced the extremely popular Emblem Spod Reel for a few years but has now brought such a key piece of kit into the price range of more anglers with this Emcast version. It matches the superb (especially when you consider the price) Emcast 5000A, allowing the angler to team up matching kit but without breaking the bank.
If you don’t use Emcast reels, however, the features on this still make it a great choice for spod and marker work.
Rods don’t have to be expensive to be good, and these are the perfect example and would be ideal for newcomers to the sport or someone on a budget who doesn’t want to compromise on quality.
With a progressive action, these are great all-round carp rods. Although you won’t be casting leads to the horizon, there is enough power to comfortably fish on the vast majority of UK carp waters and, of course, you don’t have such a stiff blank that you no longer enjoy playing fish.
These are responsive and bend, which is exactly what you want for modern-day carp angling.
When we heard that the team at Shimano had a new big pit on the market, you can imagine our excitement.
Having developed some of the best carp fishing reels over the years, we automatically set the bar high and this new launch has certainly lived up to our expectations.
As soon as we opened the box the improved matt black cosmetics stuck out; this timeless finish will be a great addition to any existing setup and is sure to be a firm favourite among the ‘cult anglers’.
Moving onto the reel itself, the instant drag is simply a joy to use.
